Overview:

The Postgraduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health Nursing aims to provide students with an understanding of the history and development forensic psychiatric services. The course also develops a range of assessment and intervention skills that can be applied to mentally disordered offenders. Another component of the course enables students to critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the institutional and community management of the mentally disordered offender.


Career opportunities:

This university accredited course is aimed at Registered Mental Health or Comprehensive nurses seeking to consolidate their forensic mental health nursing skills through a formal university qualification. Such a qualification is likely to make a significant contribution to the student's career advancement and professional development.


 Professional recognition

The Postgraduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health Nursing is a formally accredited Australian University Award.  The course content was developed in closed collaboration with forensic mental health professionals.  Furthermore, a large proportion of the study modules were written by practising and well-respected Forensic Nurses.


Course structure/units

The course comprises four units of study:

NFS 5101       Fundamentals of Forensic Nursing and. mana gement

NFS 5102       Assessment of the Mentally Disordered Offender          

NSP5242        Advanced Nursing Practice (an in-depth focus on an aspect of forensic mental health care chosen by the student and assigned Tutor)

NFS 5103       Forensic Nursing Intervention Skills  or

CMH5101      Harm Minimisation (focus on minimising self-harm)


Course length/duration:

1 year full-time or part-time equivalent. The course is most conducive to part-time study and represents the most popular way of completing the course.


Admission requirements:

 ·        RMHN or Comprehensive registration.

 ·        Current employment in a forensic mental health setting for minimum of 17 hours per week. The forensic setting must be approved by the Course Coordinator.

 ·        Access and willingness to attend a few selected forensic support agencies.

Clinical practice component


Further studies:

The units in this course can be used as elective units in a range of postgraduate nursing courses at Edith Cowan University, including the Master of Nursing by coursework.
