Welcome to the
Forensic Psychiatric Nurses' Association (FPNA) website. The FPNA through its membership is helping to shape the future of forensic psychiatric nursing.

It is the intent of the association to encourage active participation of its members, we therefore call on you to do the following for the association can only be as good as you the members want it to be.

  • Stand for election to represent your region to the National Council and the managing executive.

  • Tell your regional representative the issues you think are important.

  • Tell us what you think and suggest which priorities the Association should engage into.

  • Attend local and national meetings and events.

  • Support and implement the Associations agreed strategies.

ASSOCIATION'S AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Our mission statement is ......

To promote the art and science of forensic psychiatric nursing thereby improving the quality of care to our patients by fulfilling the following objectives.

  • Creating and maintaining a body of people with specialist knowledge in forensic psychiatric nursing.

  • Furthering the education and training of forensic psychiatric nurses and help maintain their professional standards.

  • Acting as a representative body for forensic psychiatric nurses by influencing policy at formulation and implementation level both at local and national level.

  • Providing the means of communication between members of the Association.

THE ASSOCIATION'S ACTIVITIES

The association organises various events throughout each year in order to attain a previously stated objective of improving the standard of care to the patient population. This involves quarterly educational meetings where a prominent speaker is invited to speak on a topic which is of interest to forensic psychiatry. Location for these meetings are varied in order to ensure equality of access to the activities of the association.

Additionally, there is a two day national conference which is held annually. Prominent speakers with specialist interest in the care of the forensic psychiatric patient are invited. Papers for presentation at concurrent sessions are always invited. The conference usually takes place in October.

THE CONFERENCE

The annual conference provides the forum for the exchange of ideas and keeping up to date with advances in the field of forensic psychiatry.

The venue for the conference, changes from year to year in order to bring the speakers to the membership. The speakers for the two days event, which takes place usually in October, are multi-professional including eminent people from patient representative groups.

As part of the conference, we organise workshops or concurrent sessions. These sessions provides the delegates the opportunities to discuss in small groups different projects and innovations which others are willing to share. There is always a very strong competition for leading these workshops.

REGIONAL

Each region is encouraged to produce a list of activities to be circulated among its membership and to the chair for circulation nationally. It is hoped the association's businesses could be discussed at these meetings.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

The association organises quarterly one day seminars throughout the country. The purpose of these seminars are to complement the learning process. They also provide a means of making contact with other FPNA members and sharing experiences.

DISCOUNTS

Organising these activities involve a great deal of financial outlay. The association through sponsorship are able to offer reduced attendance charges to members.

Where the full cost cannot be borne in its entirety discounts are arranged.
